The spring thaw has led the County of Stettler to close area roads due to flooded roadways.

Road closures are in effect until further notice on Range Road 17-1 east of Gadsby, and Township Road 34-3A southwest of Byemoor.

“The first one is listed as Range Road 17-1, between Hwy 12 and Township Road 39-0, and the second road closure is at Township Road 34-3A between Range Road 18-2 and 18-3,” said Niki Thorsteinsson, the county’s director of communications.

Range Road 17-4 between Township Road 38-2 and Highway 12 is also closed until further notice. Meantime, Township Road 41-4 between Range Road 18-2 and Range Road 17-5 is temporarily closed.

The County of Stettler has also closed a small portion of Range Road 18-3 at Township Road 39-0 in the Botha area.

Township Road 39-0 may be accessed from Range Road 18-3 by using the curve, as the straight portion of 18-3 is temporarily closed.

“We’ve had a lot of runoff through the ditches, so our crews have been out there pumping water from them wherever they can. Once it’s safe so the roads can handle weights again, they will open back up, but that could take some time until it dries up.”

County residents are asked to call in any washed out roads they may see around the district.

“They can contact us at 403-742-4441, where we’ve been getting quite a few calls today. It then goes up on our ratepayer request line and then our public works crews get out there as quickly as they can.”

“Over the weekend, the county office is closed but they can call our after-hours emergency line if they notice a washout or safety issue anywhere in the county at 403-741-6133,” said Thorsteinsson.

She added that the county appreciates everyone’s patience.

“Mother Nature always gets the best of us in the spring, and we’re trying to get everything cleaned up as best we can, because we know that people are still hauling feed and cattle, and pretty soon seed as well.”
