The Stettler Public Library was busy this Saturday afternoon, Nov. 18, as kids came in to participate in the International Games Day event, where they could compete against one another on screen playing various video games.

An avid gamer himself, Shaun Ross supervised the event and organized the tournament.

"I had sign ups early in the morning for anyone who wanted to participate, and then we went from the younger kids to the older kids, and ended with Mario Kart," Ross said. "The games played were Super Smash Bros Wii U and Mario Kart 8, because they are both friendly for everyone and easy to pick up and play."

Ross added that those games were also quite competitive.

As 20 kids and teens took part in the competition, there was a lull at the back as kids focused on the games and let out an occasional reaction.

Justice Savage was the Smash winner, while Bradly Spencer came in second.

Ross is the library's go-to guy when kids want any of the newer games or aren't sure how to navigate through a new one.

"I went to college for 3D animation and learned a lot about the mechanics of gaming," Ross said. "When you don't find me making posters for the library, I am playing Overwatch or Warframe on PC. That or making my own games."

Ross said that Saturday's gaming event was the last of the year, but he has new idea for 2017.

"Keep an eye out for more gaming events in the new year, such as Game Over 2017, Smash Bros Day 2017, and more," Ross added.
