A 21-year-old Calgary man is dead after being struck by a train near Canmore in the early morning hours of New Year’s day.
The unidentified man was struck by the train shortly before 4 a.m. According to RCMP and Canadian Pacific Railway, the man was lying on the tracks themselves when he was struck.
The conductor of the eastbound train saw the deceased before the collision and tried to stop,, but was unable to do so in time, police report.
“The collision was unavoidable,” Cpl. Shane Fletcher, of the Canmore RCMP, said.
RCMP, Fire and Emergency crews and medical personnel responded to the call, and found the man, who had died from his injuries.
