Student Wellness Day was a great success, and continues Clearview’s commitment to supporting the health of our children.

On Thursday, November 30th, 86 students from Grade 5 to Grade 9 came together to enhance wellness in their schools.

Over the past two years, student-led teams have taken on the task of enhancing their school using an Action Research process. In September student groups met with Barb Gano (Clearview’s Student Wellness coordinator) and Stacie Pederson (AHS School Health facilitator) to identify a research question to explore ideas to lead positive change at their school.

School’s action research question topics for 2017-2018 ranged from: enjoyable outdoor activities, healthy eating (smoothie recipes and a healthy breakfast cookbook), building kind and positive relationships, increasing face to face interactions and improving their work spaces.

At the workshop, students brought their questions and gathered to explore their ideas further. Students began the day working through the initial stages of the action research process, and worked side by side with resource people from the local area collecting information and ideas, asking questions, and exploring various wellness resources.

The afternoon saw students formulating actions steps and developing plans based on their research collected in phase one. Throughout the day students were exposed to a variety of wellness activities and events to explore their own personal wellness and grab some ideas to take back to their schools.

Over the next few months teams will go back to their schools to finalize their plans and begin implementing their projects. February and March will see the student teams observing the effects of their plan and collecting data to determine the outcomes of their projects.

Watch for updates from your student wellness team at your school.
