2000 – 10 YEARS AGO
• The former Gulf Canada resources building in Stettler was demolished to make way for a new IGA (now Sobey’s). Constructed in 1978, the building was a cornerstone of the downtown for over 20 years
• Kevin Sorenson, 41, of Killam will be the candidate for the new Canadian Alliance Party in the local Crowfoot constituency in the next federal election.
1990 – 20 YEARS AGO
• The “Cucooni” a better baby bug invented by Noreen Kapp of Stettler, has been accepted for trial marketing by stores in Alberta.. Meanwhile, plans are being developed for sales across Canada and abroad.
• Letters will be going home to parents from William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler to ask them what they think about condom dispensers in boys’ and girls’ washrooms. “We just want to get some feel about what people think,” said John Dodds, who chairs the high school committee.
1980 – 30 YEARS AGO
• Stettler and District’s 75th Anniversary Search for Talent has awarded the $500 first prize award to the Stettler piano duo of Mark Filipchuk and Allan Cbykerda. A $300 prize was awarded to the Linda Kids Chorus.
• Village of Halkirk council elected Dale Kent as its mayor while councillors Don Engel and Dave Chick took the oath of office during the organizational meeting. Oct. 20.
1970 – 40 YEARS AGO
• Big Valley Athletic Association has undertaken a project to install artificial ice and improve the waiting room facilities at the (unnamed) skating rink. There is no reason to doubt that this project will be completed and paid for by Nov. 20.
• The main winner in the battle between a mini skirt and a midi skirt is the pant suit.
1960- 50 YEARS AGO
• Stettler branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will host Remembrance Day services Nov. 11 at the Memorial Hall before the Legion will lead the proceedings to Stettler Memorial Park where Rev. Father Battle will say the Prayer of Remembrance.
• Stettler Figure Skating Club is pleased to announce that Harry Nevard of Edmonton Figure Skating Club will teach this coming season, and has previously taught in Vancouver and Prince George, British Columbia.
1950 – 60 YEARS AGO
• Years from now, farmers will recall October 1980 as the galdarn meanest on record. Four times, they saw lush crops covered with heavy wet snows while cold temperature prevailed.
• Gadsby rancher Dan Wood has sailed for England as he says there is a shortage of marriageable women in this area. “I wouldn’t want to commit myself, but I will say I don’t intend to go back to cooking and eating by myself,” he said.
1940 – 70 YEARS AGO
• The Red Cross White Elephant Sale took place in Castor at the Legion Hall under the convenorship of Mrs. Gregson. Articles donated for the sale included a grand piano, a horse, a cream separator, many chickens and small items.
• Under new progressive management, Lake View Hotel in Erskine underwent the first stages of modernization last week. Prioprietor/manager Mr. C.P. Champion said there will be a new bar built and the dining room replaced with a lunch counter.
1930 – 80 YEARS AGO
• The fourth Chautauqua festival held in Byemoor was a success in spite of the crop failure and cold weather. Stanley Hall was well filled at all performances.
• The Let: Large attractive furnished room, double bed, closet, ground floor, one person $9 or $12 for two people. J. Walters, Stettler.
1920 – 90 YEARS AGO
• Slim Baines held an auction sale and barbecue which drew a very large crowd. A steer and a sheep were roasted whole and placed at the disposals of the guests who dug in with most zest.
• Ladies of the Gadsby Omega Circle announce that the community bazaar and sale of home baking will be held the last of November as all proceeds will go to improve the cemetery.
1910 – 100 YEARS AGO
• There was quite a blaze at the Bassler farm near Botha as the bunk house belonging to Mark Robinson’s threshing outfit upset and took fire, burning entirely up and also destroyed two sod buildings.
• Marked improvements to the interior of the opera house nave been completed. The walls have been covered with red burlap to a height of four feet, then a green wall and white border with stencil design.
