HALKIRK HERALD -- An early spring, intense heat over summer and plenty of rain showers brought on an early harvest. Farmers are busy in the fields harvesting peas and other early grains. Unfortunately, not all of the haying is completed because of those same evening showers.

Darrell and Joanne Howe along with Basil and Christine Nichols recently returned from a trip to Eastern Europe. They spent five days in the beautiful city of Budapest in Hungary where they did mega site seeing of the historic buildings. They also enjoyed a night time boat ride on the Danube river. From there they travelled to Kostinbrod, Bulgaria meeting with eight other members of the first Canadian Habitat for Humanity Build in Bulgaria. They then spent two weeks helping to construct a house which mostly involved plastering the walls with cement. This Habitat project is building four houses in Kostinbrod for families. On one weekend, they travelled to the mountain region in Bulgaria touring the Rila Monastery; the ancient city of Plovdiv (that has evidence of habitation since the sixth millennium BC); and a mountain ski village. This is not their first tour with Habitat.
