LIBRARY CORNER: Leap ahead into learning

Library Corner for February 29, 2024

Celebrate Leap Year Day by treating yourself to something out of the ordinary—like a quiet read in a peaceful corner of the library, or a new book or movie from our new arrivals shelf. But the Stettler Public Library is so much more than books! We offer approximately 80 different activities each month for all ages. Check this out!

Children:

There is always something fun to do at Something Cool After School on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m. Not much is better than digging your fingers into playdough, unless it’s edible playdough that we’ll make on Thursday, Feb. 29.

Join us Tuesday, March 5 when we’ll be making Bubble Paint masterpieces. Have you ever tried to make unpoppable bubbles? Learn the secret to them on Thursday, March 7.

Bring your tots (0-5 yrs) for the fun and learning that’s part of Read & Rhyme each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. We’ll sweeten the pot with a small prize once you reach your reading goals when participating in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Ask the staff about this wonderful program.

If school is getting you down, why not give one-on-one tutoring a try? We offer free sessions with a caring adult that could improve your child’s academics. Call for an appointment on Mondays 4-6 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays 4-8 p.m.

Teens & ’Tweens:

Turn up the heat—we’re melting perler beads! Come design something spectacular with us on Wednesday, March 6 at 4:30 p.m. Ages 10+.

Dungeons and Dragons night offers strategic storytelling and adventure (with snacks) on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. for ages 13+.

Adults:

Emergencies happen. Prepare yourself for the unexpected with LifeSaver Duo: Navigating Emergencies with Confidence on Tuesday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. Paramedic Nolan Rockwell will show you how to help someone undergoing a cardiac arrest or accidental opioid poisoning. Pre-registration required. Ages 16 and up.

Film Circuit at the Library presents The Holdovers following a curmudgeonly prep school instructor who is forced to stay on campus during Christmas break to babysit students with nowhere else to go. Enjoy this Oscar-nominated film on Monday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. Our concession will be open with free hot buttery popcorn. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Give your Easter decorating pizzazz with these classy-looking decoupage eggs at Crystal’s Crafting Club on Thursday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m. Be sure to book your spot ahead as spaces are limited.

Afternoon Friends meets for a rousing game of Bingo on Tuesday, March 6 at 1 p.m. Join us for the friendly competition and socializing.

Copies of the next Reader’s Circle selection, Yellowface by R.F. Kuang, are now available for those who love to get together with others and talk books. How far will someone go to cover the fact that they are not who they say they are?

Join us for a scintillating discussion about the question that the novel poses at the end of next month.

For anyone with symptoms of cognitive decline and their care partners, the Alzheimer Society has developed Minds in Motion, a program of exercises and games in a fun, social environment. Join us on Thursdays at 1 p.m.

Those affected by the alcoholism of someone close to them can find support and encouragement at Al-Anon meetings on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. Everyone welcome.

All Ages:

Tales at 11 offers stories and so much more for the family each Saturday morning at 11. The whole family is welcome: Mom, Dad, Grandma, Nana, Grandpa, Auntie, Uncle, etc!

Smash Brothers Tournament happens again on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. Choose your favourite Nintendo character and duke it out to the end with other gamers.

Did you know that your library card gives you free access to newspapers and magazines from over 150 countries in over 60 languages worldwide? Or that you can access advanced data for your ancestry research through the library?

Could you use some help navigating your smartphone, tablet, or other electronic device? Our staff is happy to offer instruction.
