Closing spiel to be held on March 25 and 26

There’s one more round of curling before the season ends and that’s the closing Spiel on the weekend of March 23 to 25.

HALKIRK HERALD — There’s one more round of curling before the season ends and that’s the closing Spiel on the weekend of March 23 to 25. It is open to men, ladies’, teens, mixed or family or any combination and promises to be a fun time. Please phone JD or Sandra at 403-884-2250 to enter as a single or as a team.

Dan Fowler and his sons have a team at the Erskine bonspiel this week and JD Johnson is curling with a Stettler team.

Winners in our ladies’ bonspiel last weekend, were Elaine Fossen of Forestburg in the first event, local curler Sandra Johnson in the second event and Tammy Spady of Alliance won the third event. On the men’s side the winners were Richie Chapman of Erskine taking first in the first event, Dan Fowler placed second, Kurt Chick came in third place and Eldon McCrindle from Byemoor placed fourth; in the second event JD Johnson came first with Dean Fowler second, while the third event saw two Castor teams with Basil Nichols placing first and Lyle Webber second; the fourth event saw Jordon Hooper first and Ray Stirling second. A banquet and dance was well received by the curlers and the community. A thank you to all the volunteers and supporters.

Congrats to the Castor girls’ basketball team who won gold and to the Castor boys’ team who won bronze at the CWAJHAA tournament held at the Gus Wetter in Castor on Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11.

The Castor Atom team won the Zone 4 playoffs and were presented with a Tier 3 banner. Congratulations to Ray Musgrove, the goalie, who registered a shut out in the final game against Consort. His dad, Grant, is one of the coaches. This team also has a number of Halkirk grandparents who were at the games to cheer them on. They have now moved on to provincials in Provost. Devon Johnson is on the Stettler girls’ hockey team and they play their final round against Whitecourt this week.

Sympathy is extended to Margaret and George Rowland and family on the passing of Margaret’s sister, Joan ( Craig) Robbins of Mayerthorpe on March 14. Services will be held on March 22 at the Stettler United Church.

We also send condolences to the family of Karen Turner of Castor who passed away on March 14. Services held at the Knox United Church on Saturday.

Word has been received on the passing of Herman Pfisterer, 78, of Wainwright on March 11. Herman operated the Halkirk butcher shop many years ago. No story in Home Fires but the year was probably in the early 1960s. He is survived by his wife Theresa, four children, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were held on March 16 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Wainwright.

Jan Koenraadt spent last week in Holland visiting with his mom and siblings.

Kent and Evelyn Johnson returned this week from four weeks soaking in the nice weather in Laughlin, Nevada.

Coming up: March 23 final bonspiel at the curling rink; March 27 the start of Spring Break at our local schools; March 28 floor curling at the Senior centre 7 pm; March 30 Hall board regular bingo 7:30.
