Morbeck junior champ at regional speak-offs

On Saturday, March 17, representatives of local 4-H clubs travelled to Delia for the regional public speaking competition.

From the Stettler area, those members included Gracie Morbeck (a junior) and Drew Bignell (an intermediate), both of the Erskine 4-H Beef Club, Emily Brown (a junior) of the Big Valley Beef Club and Mackenzie Sorenson (an intermediate) of the Big Valley Rusty Spurs (Horse) Club.

Each speaker gave a three- to five-minute prepared speech, and a one-to-two-minute impromptu speech.

Morbeck won the junior competition. She placed third last year and has made it to the regionals all three of her years as a junior member.

Brown finished second in juniors. Mackenzie Sorenson placed second in the intermediate competition.

The province is divided into seven 4-H regions — each of which is wide geographically. The 4-H members start with public speaking at the club level, must finish first or second to compete at the district level, and must place first or second to compete at the regionals.

The age categories are junior, intermediate and senior. The top two seniors will compete one more time, after the regionals, at the provincial championship.
